Sorry, I am new to this forum and previously posted this message in the wrong place.

Here goes again. I have had a Magic 2 tripod for years, but have not used it for a very long time. I now have a Canon D30 and would like to begin using it again. Can anyone tell me whether this tripod is heavy enough for this camera and also could anyone suggest the best head to use with it?

Thankyou in anticipation. rosemary.

Dont know the tripod, but as far as heads, I highly suggest the Acratech. I have used kirk and RSS as well. Tried a manfrotto but after 1 trip I gave it away. The Acratech is lightweight, and STRONG!! Also very easy to use in bad/cold weather. Was using mine the other day at around -1 to +5 when I was out in the snow. The QR plates are the same as the kirk and RRS, and to me that is important as they are easy to get no matter where you are. What lenses are you looking to use with it???
http://acratech.net/ Check out the webiste. Its also really nice that they are made here in the USA, actually all the work is done in So Cal. Scott is the owner of the company and is there working and getting his hands dirty every day. If you got a question, send them an email and he will give you an honest and personal answer, and to me that is important too.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply Kevin. The tripod I have, is made by Cullman. I had not heard of the Acratech, but it appears that they are sold here in the UK, so I will be researching these. They do seem rather expensive so that may be an issue.
May I say that I envy your photo opportunities.. I spent six weeks travelling in Alaska in 1997 and visited Soldatna. It was the best trip of my life.

Thanks again for your help.

Yah I know Scott will ship direct also, and it might be cheaper to buy it that way with the current exchange rate. Compared to other ball heads in the same quality range, it is actually less expensive than most the others in its league.

Thanks. Its a change for me to be here in AK full time now. But I love it. nature and wildlife photography have always been something I loved, even as a kid. Its a major change from my past work/living shooting cars, but I hope over the next few years to work it out so I can do both.

If I can be of service or answer any questions, please let me know. There is a review by a user looking at the acratech head compared to rss and kirk and such. Its under cameras and gear as i recall on Pixel-Shooter.com I will add a link here to help you out as well. He was from Australia and ordered it from the USA and had shipped to him. BTW Pixel shooter is another very friendly forum. Many members from the NW and also the UK. One from the UK bought my 35mm F1.4L and had me ship it to him. Here is the link. http://www.pixel-shooter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8938

Hope this helps. Take care

Kevin

A quick Google search reveals that the Cullman Magic 2 is rated at 2.5 kg. (about 5.5 lbs. US). This seems a little light for good stability with a DSLR, especially with longer focal length (and heavier) lenses.

Is this the tripod you have?

Sorry Jim,

I have not logged in for a few days, so have only just seen your post.

Yes this is the tripod I have, I was coming to the conclusion that it could be a little light, so it's good to have that confirmed.

I'll begin researching now, for a replacement, as well as a head.
I appreciate your interst.
