Congrats on the new camera. Nice shot. A little dark because of the shadows on the person but still a neat shot. I'd sure hate to have my camera near him. :D

LOL Mike takes his sensor dust very seriously. Did you see what he does to get the dust out of his film bodies? LOL :)

The "kit" lens that came with the D50 is actually a very good lens. My suggestion is to stick with that for now for the wide-mid zoom and wait a month or so until the new 55-200 VR f/3.5-5.6 Nikkor is shipping. Street price for that is an amazing $250.00 US. The VR (Vibration Reduction) is terrific for long focal lengths.

With those two lenses you'll cover all focal lengths and then just start taking pics.

I ask the same question 3 months ago when I got my first dSLR.

Kit Lens 18-55mm. This is a good lens. I love how close it focus, at 18mm.

I also got a Tameron 75-300mm zoom. I like the reach of the lens, it's great for taking pictures of the kids at the park, as long as it is sunny.

Nikon 50mm f/1.8. This is the lens that spends most of the time on the camera. I use this lens when taking photos indoors in poor light. I also use this lens as a portrait lens, although I am kind of close to the unwilling subjects( My kids, 3 years old, and 18 months).

I would recommend you check out the Nikon 50mm f/1.8.

I second the vote on the 50 1.8. This is the lens that's most often on my camera also. At some point you will need a faster lens for low light situations. For around $100, the 50 1.8 provides that, even though alot of people complain about it's focal length. For an extra $169, you can get a set of Kenko tubes which work excellent with the 50 1.8 for Macro shots if you like to get up close and personal with your subject. The tubes work with other lenses as well.

As for other lenses, it really depends on your needs. I'd stick with the kit lens and the cheap 50 1.8 until you figure out your other needs. You may find yourself needing something longer, or something wider. I'd recommend staying away from most of the cheapo glass, as you will regret getting it after you see the sharpness of the 50 1.8. That's why I haven't put my POS 28-80 or my worthless Quauntaray 70-300 on but a couple of times since picking up the 50. The results just don't satisfy me anymore... damn.... maybe that 50 1.8 isn't all that cheap. Causes a severe case of lens lust.

Enjoy your D50... it's a great little camera, and capable of excellent results!
